About Shaolin Kempo Karate
The Venerable art of Shaolin Kempo Karate was founded over 35 years ago by Grandmaster Fredrick J. Villari, and has become internationally recognized and respected with over 15,000 Black belts, and millions of students worldwide. His art traces its origins back almost 2000 years to the famous Shaolin temple of China, of which many of the original training methods are still applied in his schools today. The present form of Shaolin Kempo Karate is based on the concept of the “Four Ways of Fighting”:
Punching/Striking– With hands open or closed, fore-arms & elbows
Kicking- With feet, legs, knees, or shins
Felling- to overturn an opponent by throwing, tripping, pulling, pushing, or scooping actions.
Grappling- By either wrestling, holding, breaking, locking bones or joints against nerve centers.
Grandmaster Villari understood that the ultimate in self-defense lay not in one way or style of fighting. By combining the “Four Ways of Fighting.”, he devised and developed ways to integrate diverse methods of fighting into one, eliminating weaknesses and vulnerabilities. This is the central core, theory and method behind Villari’s art of Shaolin Kempo Karate.
Shaolin Kung-Fu is the backbone of the Villari system since Grandmaster Villari felt it was the best for promoting overall good health, wisdom and longevity. This system is well balanced, incorporating mind, body and spirit into one. It is renowned for its devastating kicking and punching techniques which imitates the defensive strategies of the five animals: Tiger, Crane, Dragon, Snake, and Leopard.
The Shaolin principle of fighting is based on circular movements, speed, and conditioning while developing strong internal energy, tendons and ligaments. These are essential for producing a superior fighter.
Kempo (Ch’uan-fa) is a Chinese Boxing method that blends hard and soft movements that compliment each other, though it is not sophisticated enough by itself. Kempo depends on the grace of Shaolin maneuvers with its integrated with thequick shuffling footwork and the power of hard Karate.
Karate is also highly favored by Grandmaster Villari, and he regards it as simple and quick to learn and execute. Known for its linear and angular movements with quick shuffles and in-line fighting movements, karate-type blows are more mechanical and explosive in execution than Shaolin blows. Karate concentrates more on external power and fewer moves are required to get the job done.
The Shaolin Kempo Karate system also incorporates the art of Chin-Na. It is the ultimate form of neutralizing an opponent utilizing holding, seizing, locking, throwing, felling and effective controlling techniques. No Other art offers such control over a would-be attacker!
This style is further augmented by incorporating the movements of the Immortal Monkey. Known for its art of illusion, the Monkey cannot be hit. Its movements are lightning-quick with the ability to change its direction rapidly. It never exhausts its energy and has superior longevity.
Grandmaster Villari enhanced the Martial Arts, directing it more toward practical applications for the 21st century. Villari’s students and instructor’s train with traditional Kata and stances for exercise and mental discipline, yet fight in casual stances similar to Western boxing. His art is a blend of Eastern traditions and mental disciplines combined with the North American reality of dealing with stronger, more diverse opponents.
Today, Grandmaster Villari is the figurehead in charge of North America’s largest chain of Martial Arts studios and remains to be one of the most highly recognized Masters’ and modern-day pioneers of the Martial Arts in North America!
